CBS Sports announced on Friday that lead NFL analyst Tony Romo has been placed on leave until further notice. The move comes in the wake of recent reports regarding a legal incident involving the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback in Wisconsin. To fill the void in their broadcasting booth, the network revealed that former Houston Texans standout J.J. Watt will step in to work alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for upcoming NFL coverage.
The suspension follows an arrest on July 23 in Milwaukee, where Romo was suspected of operating a vehicle while under the influence. According to documents obtained by ABC News from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo was pulled over on a Thursday evening and allegedly performed poorly during standardized field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. Body camera footage of the encounter was released by authorities this past Wednesday.
Legal filings indicate that Romo faces three separate citations stemming from the stop, including operating while under the influence, unsafe passing, and possessing an open container within a moving vehicle. While he was released shortly after his arrest, he is now scheduled to make a court appearance on September 21 at 8:30 a.m.
Since retiring from his decorated career with the Cowboys, Romo has become one of the most prominent voices in sports media as the lead analyst for The NFL on CBS since 2017. Representatives for Romo have not yet provided any official comments regarding the charges or his current status with the network.
