After a strange experiment last summer that saw him briefly shifted to cornerback, Melton looked entirely comfortable back at wideout. The highlight of the session came when he soared over Keisean Nixon to haul in a sixty yard bomb from Jordan Love, sending a visible jolt of energy through the stands at Ray Nitschke Field. With several teammates sidelined, Melton is seeing increased opportunities and seems determined to make them count.
While Melton flourished, the wider receiving room faced a wave of setbacks. Injuries continue to plague the unit, with Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden both missing time. These absences have forced coaching staff to shuffle their depth chart, providing openings for players like Melton and Christian Watson. Watson continued to showcase his elite verticality, torching rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse on a crossing route that likely would have resulted in a massive touchdown in a live game setting.
The battle lines were equally clear on the other side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon unleashed an aggressive series of blitz packages that frequently overwhelmed the offensive line. While Jordan Love managed some savvy plays using hard counts to confuse the defense, there were moments where pass protection crumbled completely.
